Many countries have been able to achieve such goals as poverty elimination, urban development, income distribution and social justice through the development of the agriculture sector. There is also an idea that farmers’ products should firstly be developed for behalf of national economic growth.
Agriculture in the Kurdistan Region
Agriculture in the Kurdistan Region has its own characteristics and can be developing and modernizing the national economy through development of the agriculture. Thus, this sector becomes an important economic basic, especially in a region, which has more than 1 million and half hectare lands. Moreover, the region has a four-season environment. Certainly, there are more than 3,500 villages and several sub-districts and districts that previously owned suitable agricultural infrastructure.
The Kurdistan Regional Government needs a long-term plan in order to solve the shortages of the Infrastructure of the sector. Even revival of this sector requests further budgets, long-term programs and plans, so that we can take steps towards achieving food security and finding job opportunities for hundreds thousands of individuals through the revival of the sector.
The roles of agriculture in national economy
1-Workforce: – Economists believe that levels of development and economic growth in each country is related to number of activities of the three sectors as; agriculture, industry and services. It is also said that increasing numbers of workforces faster will transfer to other sectors.
2-Food security: – The meaning of food security is physical and economic provision (for all citizens in all seasons as necessary according to their wishes). 2.3 billion Of the world’s population has been troubled by food shortages and 16 percent of the country’s population face lack of necessity foods.
3-Resource development: – The agriculture sector can move forward through using resources appropriately. Such Program as:-
•Changes in the way we use farmland in terms of new science and technology.
•Training farmers within modern scientific styles.
•Develop water resources.
•Rebuilding villages, the towns and improving their living conditions in order to they do not face immigration toward the big cities.
•Prevent nature from being destroyed.
•Prevent air and water pollution.
•Developing food industry.
Helping farmers due to change old ways of agriculture will lead to promote the field of agriculture and encourage investors, as well as solving the problem of land, are all beginning of the ways to raise the level of crops, protect food security, develop the economy and find other sources of income. Unifying ownership of agriculture lands in Kurdistan in a condition that serves the farmers is another significant ways of improving the sector.
Allocate a portion of the region’s annual budget to the sector of the agriculture that is not less than 10 percent of the budget. The region should rely on advanced agriculture ways, especially, progressive sewage. Moreover, it must encourage farmers to expand their crops in a planned manner, particularly when a part of the land in the fields can be returned to their crops by depleting rocks and natural pastures.
